Should NJ Businesses Cater to Employees' 'Commuter Anxiety'?

There’s no dearth of commuters or traffic on New Jersey’s roadways, and anyone who’s ever been on the turnpike, parkway or countless other major arteries in the state knows that.

But one woman in southern New Jersey says her “commuter anxiety” has led to her wrongful termination, and has filed suit in court against her employer, according to the Courier-Post.

Andrea DeGerolamo, of Berlin, asked her employer, Fulton Financial Corp., if her hours could be changed so she could arrive after the morning commuter rush and leave before the evening rush, the report said.

DeGerolamo claimed the busy roadways and traveling to and from work gave her “commuter anxiety” and depression, the report says. While Fulton Financial Corp. accommodated the change, DeGerolamo claims her duties were significantly downgraded and her employment was subsequently terminated in May 2013, the report said.

So, should New Jersey businesses – located in a commuter-heavy state – cater to employees’ commuter anxiety?

I do a flex schedule, I come in an hour early and leave an hour earlier than everyone else and the traffic is still bad but manageable. A 15 min ride sometimes takes two hours but that is how it is! My employer was kind enough to give me an option. Not to come in an hour late and leave an hour really ?? What employer would go for that? Anyway I get a lot of work done while I am here alone in the early mornings. It works well for both of us and I am very happy that way so they get more out of me than if I had a long compute. Boo hoo she should find a new job! Of course no one will hire her once they find this out!

Large companies should make different start and quit times. Ex. 8:25 not 8:00 that will reduce traffic in the area.

Another example of a frivolous lawsuit, as Andrea could have started earlier and left later. Sounds like the perfect candidate for a job in DC.

This whole thing is absurd. Change the hours? What was requirement when she was hired? Now she wants to have a company change it's hours to accommodate her after she interviewed and worked for them knowing full well where they were located and the hours. This person should be charged with a frivolous lawsuit and fined or imprisoned for such stupidity. She should be smart enough to be thankful she has a job these days. How about waking up earlier and beating the traffic? Then staying a little later and waiting until it subsides? Another person looking for a hand out. Sadly the bank's lawyer or insurance company will advise them to settle and pay her off to go away.

More lawyer BS. This shouldn't even be allowed. If she hates the commute, QUIT! I have co-workers who travel each way over a hundred miles a day and they never complain. This woman ought to put on her big girl panties and stop whining like a little girl.
