MAHWAH RESIDENT EARNS ULTIMATE TOASTMASTERS DISTINCTION

Long time Mahwah resident John Engeman has completed the requirements for his Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM) Designation – an accomplishment earned by less than one percent of the greater than 260,000 Toastmasters International World-Wide. It’s the highest award a person can receive as a member of Toastmasters.

To earn the DTM Designation, a member must demonstrate excellence in public speaking and leadership by completing a series of steps, which include oral presentations, district leadership roles, mentoring new members and advising new and/or troubled clubs. To become a Distinguished Toastmaster Engeman presented more than 50 speeches at the club and community level and completed more than 20 leadership projects. In addition, he served as Area Governor, conducted officer training and coordinated area contests.

“I have worked very hard to achieve this distinction and it’s helped me in so many aspects of my life that it’s been transformational,” said Engeman.  “I hope others will challenge themselves and follow my example, because if you embrace all the opportunities it really is a life changing journey.

Earning the DTM award typically requires many years of service to the organization in order to develop the proficiency needed in such skills as vocal variety, gestures, extemporaneous speaking, management and organization.

“John has a genuine interest in helping others and is always generous with his time and knowledge, said Gimai Ma, Toastmasters Area 54 Governor. “Under his leadership, his home club has achieved the President’s Distinguished Award, the highest honor a club can attain. John is a wonderful leader and shining example within the organization.”

Engeman has been a Mahwah, N.J. resident for 14 years.  A former president of  Ridgewood Toastmasters, he has used the experience gained as a nine year member of Toastmasters to serve as a guest speaker at the Toastmasters in Amsterdam the Netherlands and a presenter at the EuroFinance International Cash and Treasury Management Conference in Geneva, Switzerland (2010) and Miami (2011-2012).

“The greatest reward of Toastmaster membership is the confidence obtained from being an entertaining and passionate speaker, while developing leadership skills and helping fellow members,” said Engeman.
