Health & Fitness

I Have To Get In Shape Before I Try That Class!

Everybody has to start somewhere

You have to remember everyone has to start somewhere. I know it can be intimidating walking into a gym, a boot camp, or exercise class where it might seem everyone is fit or in shape. On the contrary, all of those people at one time or another were standing exactly where you are. I know it’s scary, you're afraid you will set yourself up for a disaster or embarrassment.

I am here to tell you you're right. There are fit people on the other side of that gym door, boot camp, and group fitness class, but there are also many other people of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels. I'm sure at one time or another they were feeling exactly like you are right now. The only difference is that they over came their insecurity. (A little secret: I’m sure they still have a little insecurity but push past it every time they enter the insecurity zone).

It’s up to you to do your best to over come your insecurities and take the first step toward improving your health. You owe it to yourself!

That being said, there are a few things you can do to help ease your transition.

  • Ask a friend to go with you, there is safety in numbers!
  • If you’re apprehensive about joining a gym, take a tour, talk to the staff and even the members. I find the more friendly the staff and members, the easier it is to actually “walk in." For example, before my classes I will seek out a person who is new, pair them up with a person who is, lets say, a regular, and buddy them up.  They are always appreciative of this.
  • If you come across a fit camp, boot camp, yoga, or fitness class that interests you, reach out to the instructor. A good instructor will always be happy to answer any questions you have and will be sure to ease your concerns and fears.
  • Most group classes will offer modifications so you will always feel comfortable if there are certain things you cannot accomplish YET! Also, instructors (I can only speak for myself here) like when a new person approaches them before a class, this gives the instructor the opportunity to put the person at ease and ask if they have injuries or modifications they might need, safety is important!

So, have you been holding back on your fitness? I hope not, and if you are, now is the time to slam the door on your insecurities and go for it! In the end you will be glad you did! I am certain!
