Drivers Warned: Wintry Mix Expected Monday

Less than an inch of snow is expected to fall on Mahwah, but authorities are anticipating slick driving conditions

A forecasted wintry mix prompted Mahwah emergency responders to warn drivers in the borough of potentially hazardous driving conditions Monday.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Mahwah in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. The NWS is predicting a wintry mix, with snow and sleet early in the day, changing over to freezing rain later in the afternoon. The forecast calls for less than an inch of accumulated snow, less than half an inch of sleet, and a small amount of ice.

Sunday night, the Mahwah Police sent out the following text message and email alert to residents via a Nixle alert:

“Snow and freezing rain is expected early in the day becoming just freezing rain during Monday afternoon. Accumulations of less than 1/2 inch in addition to freezing rain and hazardous road conditions. Winds 5 to 10 mph. The precipitation will begin as snow and changeover to sleet around midday and then changing to all rain by the evening. Expect hazardous driving conditions and slippery roadways during these conditions. Use caution. This alert issued by the Mahwah Police Department.”
