UPDATE: Mahwah Handing Out 5,000 Free Hurricane Sandy Sandbags

First 1,000 bags were given out to residents in just over an hour; Volunteers are needed to bag, carry and deliver sand

Mahwah residents can pick up free sandbags Sunday afternoon at Commodore Perry Field. In the wake of hurricane Sandy, the Township is handing out free sandbags that can be used to block anticipated floodwaters.

The first 1,000 free sandbags were given out to residents in just over an hour Sunday afternoon. Another delivery of sand arrived at Commodore Perry before 3 p.m., and another 5,000 bags were delivered at about 4:30 p.m.

The township is looking for volunteers to help bag sand, carry bags to residents' cars, and deliver bags to residents in flood-prone areas.

According to Mayor Bill Laforet, the bags were donated by the New Jersey State Police and the sand donated by a company in upstate New York.

Over 50 volunteers were at the park Sunday afternoon helping bag and hand out sand.

The giveaway is on a first come-first serve basis. The township is sending update alerts on the giveaway using its new Nixle text message alert system.

Since power outages are inevitable having a long run time flashlight is a good idea. Lowes has a 65 hour run time flashlight for under $5.00 http://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-Flashlight-Mod-Increases-Run-Time-36X/?allstep I got mine in store. I also got one at Target. Thanks to Mayor Laforet, DPW Superintendent Sinclair, Chief of Police Batelli, all other Mahwah officials, and all Mahwah volunteers for your work at Commodore Perry today. I picked up my 10 "Sandybags" (thats right, you heard it here first) this afternoon. Thanks to all, and good luck to everyone in the next few days :) Jake

Once again, the residents of Mahwah showed what the word "community" really means. It was truly inspiring to see so many residents come out today to help their neighbors. Just another example of why we should all be so proud of our Township. My only hope is that these sandbags do not need to be put to the test. For those of you who might still be in need of bags, you can go to the back of the Commodore Perry Field parking lot where you will see a large blue tarp covering a pile of sand and MANY pre-made sandbags. You can take bags as needed. Heaven forbid that there should be a need for more sandbags, the DPW has a crate of bags. I am sure you can contact the DPW, Mayor's Office or Police Department to inquire about getting access to empty bags if the pre-made bags are depleted and there is still a need for more.

Jonathan... wow, among the first to come and the last to leave - and all this time with your shovel in the dirt. At this point I would be very glad, if none of those sand bags were ever needed. Hope everyone will stay safe.

I just went over to Commodore Perry Field to see where things stood. All the pre-made sandbags are gone. The DPW has placed a bundle of empty sandbags next to the sand pile (thanks DPW!) so that residents can fill their own sandbags if they need additional ones. Be sure to bring your own shovel. The tarp is off the pile so the sand might be wet (and thus, heavier). Again, let's pray that these bags do not need to be put to the test.
