Mahwah Residents React to Pope's Resignation on Facebook

How do you feel about the first Papal resignation since 1415?

Ramsey residents expressed respect for Pope Benedict XVI after he announced his resignation Monday.

Benedict will be the first pope to resign since 1415 when he steps down February 28. Church leaders said that Benedict made the decision because of his age and growing health concerns.

Though no local Catholic leaders responded to a request for a reaction to the news, area residents did take to the Mahwah Patch Facebook page to share their feelings on the Papal announcement.

Leon Kirshtein called the resignation “a courageous step. You just do not see people giving up that much power. Speaks well of the Church and the men who are now in charge.”

Karen Keri agreed.

“It takes a lot of courage to admit your limitations,” she posted on Facebook. “God Bless him.”

Donna Loggia added that she thinks it’s alright for a Pope to retire much like anyone else would.

“Even Popes need to retire...” she said.
