Mahwah Residents React to Pope's Resignation on Facebook

How do you feel about the first Papal resignation since 1415?

Ramsey residents expressed respect for Pope Benedict XVI after he announced his resignation Monday.

Benedict will be the first pope to resign since 1415 when he steps down February 28. Church leaders said that Benedict made the decision because of his age and growing health concerns.

Though no local Catholic leaders responded to a request for a reaction to the news, area residents did take to the Mahwah Patch Facebook page to share their feelings on the Papal announcement.

Leon Kirshtein called the resignation “a courageous step. You just do not see people giving up that much power. Speaks well of the Church and the men who are now in charge.”

Karen Keri agreed.

“It takes a lot of courage to admit your limitations,” she posted on Facebook. “God Bless him.”

Donna Loggia added that she thinks it’s alright for a Pope to retire much like anyone else would.

“Even Popes need to retire...” she said.

Patch is wondering – how do you feel about the resignation? Tell us in the comments below.

Mixed surprise, a little sadness (it's change), and admiration. He's a brave leader and I believe he has the church's best interest at heart. I'm sure this is not easy for him. It may be difficult for his successor to feel comfortable in making changes with the former Pope alive to witness and opine. God bless them both!

Its about time. This guy has been linked to one of the worst Child Molestation Rings around the world. Any other organization that commits such atrocious acts would of been shut down a long time ago. This Organized Crime Mob was able to use "The FEAR of God" to keep innocent children and their sheep- like parents quiet for too long. Lets just hope the good church stops trying to make the last pope a saint. He was worse than this guy. I say clean out all of the top ranking officials and start with guys who are not involved in this sham. Amen....
