Dozens of Mahwah residents gathered at town hall Monday night for religious songs, potato latkes and a public menorah lighting in celebration of Hanukkah 2012.

Rabbi Chanoch Kaplan of the Chabad Jewish Center of NW Bergen County led a brief ceremony Monday night, and Mahwah Mayor Bill Laforet, Councilmen Harry Williams and Chuck Jandris, and County Freeholder-Elect Tracy Zur addressed the crowd.

Kaplan encouraged residents to get excited about the holiday, and “show Hanukkah spirit in Mahwah.”

Local officials said the event showcased the township’s character.

“This is a great thing, and really shows [that Mahwah] is all about community,” Williams, who serves as chair of the recreation committee, said.
