Lecture on Forgotten and Abandoned Cemeteries

On Thursday, March 13, the Mahwah Museum Lecture Series will present “Forgotten and Abandoned Cemeteries.” This lecture will be given by Ramapo College Adjunct Professor Jeff Williamson, who, with the group “Grave Matters” has investigated and researched some of the forgotten cemeteries of Mahwah and surrounding towns. The lecture will be held in the Ramapo Reformed Church Education Bldg., 100 Island Road. Admission is $3 for non-members, free to museum members and children under 18. Reservations are recommended; to reserve, contact lectures@mahwahmuseum.org or call 201-512-0099. Refreshments will be served.

Our speaker, Jeff Williamson, will talk about local sites such as the Moffatt Road Cemetery (also known as the German/Lutheran Cemetery), Hopper cemeteries in Mahwah and Oakland and the Van Blarcom cemetery in Wyckoff. He will give a brief history of each site, as well as the genealogy and local historical sources he used. He will include information from other sites as an example of what can be done with the help of dedicated individuals. This presentation will include discussion of methods of cleaning, identification, documentation, and when possible, restoration.

The Mahwah Museum is open on Wednesdays and weekends from 1-4 p.m. and is featuring the exhibit “Neighborhoods of Mahwah: 1913-2013” and “Les Paul in Mahwah.” The Donald Cooper Model Railroad is open weekends from 1-4 p.m. Admission to the Museum is $5 for non-members, and free to members and children.
