Poker Run to Honor Fallen Mahwah Firefighter

Fund in firefighter's name has given away 30 scholarships to Mahwah High School seniors.

After a successful inaugural ride in the fall of 2012, the Lt. Patrick Roe Scholarship Fund Poker Run is set to return to Mahwah this month.

The Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 by Mahwah Ladder Co#2 after the death of the FD's 1st Lt. Patrick Roe.

Patrick was a 1998 graduate of Mahwah High School. The fund bearing his name had, until last year, awarded scholarships to Mahwah High School students using funds raised during an annual basketball game.

Since the first scholarship was given out in 2006, 30 additional scholarships have been awarded to MHS Seniors.

In 2012, Roe’s family members and friends decided it was time to change up the fundraiser, and the Poker Run was born. Its success last year prompted township firefighters to once again string up a banner about it over Franklin Turnpike and plan for the second annual event.

The MFD recently released the details explaining the event – “Over 250 people participated in last year’s inaugural event hosted by Mahwah Ladder Co. # 2. The ride begins at the Mahwah Bar & Grill on Island Road, Mahwah and will travel all scenic back roads through northern NJ and NY and will end at the Mason Jar on Rt. 202 in Mahwah.”

This year’s poker run is set for Sunday, September 29, with a rain date of October 6. Registration is from 9-11 a.m. The first 100 to register will receive a commemorative pin. The cost for riders is $ 25, passengers $15, and a community lunch after the ride is $15 per person.
