Remembering My Dad, One Year Later

Mahwah firefighter John Deming was killed in a car accident one year ago

One year ago, longtime Mahwah resident and firefighter John Deming was killed in a car accident in NYS. At the time, his son, John Deming, Jr., was living across the country. Deming returned to Mahwah for his father's funeral, and has since relocated back to Mahwah to be closer to his family and childhood friends. Deming sent Patch the following memorial in honor of the first anniversary of his father's passing.

On January 30 2012, Mr. John K. Deming, a resident of Mahwah since 1944, died in an auto accident. He was 73. Loved and Respected by Many. Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. 

In the early 1960s, he started his own business, John Deming Welding & Cutting. He was known to be the very best welder in the area. His work is visible today in many places throughout town. Everyone knew he was the man to see when it came welding.

John joined the Mahwah Company No. 1 Fire Department, Ambulance Corps and Rescue Squad in 1960. He held every office up to Assistant Chief. He was Memorialized last October by the Northwest Bergen Mutual Aid Association at the Northwest Bergen County Fire Academy. John was a member of the Exempt Firemen's Association. Remembered and recognized by New York City Police Department for his many contributions to the Bomb Squad and the Detective Endowment Association.  

Mr. Deming enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping. He took his family on numerous RV adventures throughout the United States and Canada. In the late 90's, He and Mrs. Deming drove to Alaska in they're RV. In the 1970's He took his family to Nova Scotia and from there to the Hudson Bay in Northern Quebec.

John spent many years Drag Racing his 1964 Ford Fairlane in Englishtown and Island Dragway. A family affair always. For many years he and his family snowmobiled in Upstate New York. Many miles of snowmobile trails with the whole family and his friends following him to the next destination. He is remembered as a man who worked very hard and then enjoyed his recreation time with the same intensity. 

It has been One year since his passing. He is missed greatly by his family and friends.
