Why are students being told textbooks are outdated??

After talking with my daughter today, who is a 6th grader at RRMS, I come to find out that the her Earth Science teacher DOES NOT hand out textbooks claiming that they ones they have are outdated.  Now, here she is with an average of 64 for the 1st marking period and if she is anything like me, needs a textbook to read and learn... handouts just don't cut it.  So, I wonder just how much does the field of Earth Science change that they books are outdated and how old are these textbooks anyway....  Lastly, my biggest issue with this is that the school board has elected to WASTE $3.5 million on an indoor sports  complex, that the district does not even need and yet my 6th grader is expected to learn Science without a textbook???  If money can be spent senselessly on something like a sports field, than they damn well better find the funds to purchase some new textbooks... I am absolutely disgusted with this school district... obviously the school board's priorities are out of order, because when I was in school, getting a GOOD education was at the top of the list, and we were taught for our future, not just to pass some stupid test that measures the teachers' abilities.
