Circus Performers' Camper Hanging Off Route 287 Overpass Cleared, Police Say

There were no injuries when a camper being hauled by a pickup truck jumped an overpass barrier, according to cops.

Route 287 in Mahwah reopened Wednesday afternoon, hours after crews cleaned up the remnants of an accident that left a camper hanging off the side of the overpass, according to New Jersey State Police.

The camper was being hauled by a pickup truck when the accident occurred after 10 a.m. Wednesday, police said. Two circus performers reportedly driving the pickup were not hurt in the accident, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman said.

According to an ABClocal.com report, the two women in the truck were part of the Big Apple Circus’s act called “The Mongolian Angels.” The two women were traveling from Walden, NY, to Dulles, Va., when they lost control of the truck, the report said.

Police are still investigating the accident, how the pickup and camper flipped over, and how the camper ended up suspended from the overpass, Grossman said.

The NJSP closed route 287 Southbound at the Mahwah exit, leading to some back-ups along Route 17 South and Route 202 in Mahwah.
