Car Catches Fire With Driver Inside

FD quickly put fire out after man pulled over, officials said

A car caught fire while a driver was traveling down East Ramapo Ave. in Mahwah Thursday evening, Assistant Chief Brad Stio said.

“Apparently the guy was driving from a [store] in town and someone waved him down and [told him] his car was on fire,” Stio said. “He pulled into the commuter parking lot [next to Winter’s Pond] and called us.”

The car was fully involved, but the fire was put out “pretty quickly,” by Mahwah’s Fire Department Company 2, Stio said. “There was a car next to it, but it didn’t melt or anything because we responded so quickly.”

The fire apparently started in the engine of the car and quickly spread to the passenger compartment, Stio said. The cause is unknown at this time, though Stio said it appeared to have been started by “some sort of malfunction” in the engine compartment.

The driver did not suffer any injuries as a result of the fire, officials said.
