Cops: Man Broke into Janek's Meat Market, Stole Cash and Lotto Cards

Man was arrested after a resident heard the front door glass of the Mahwah deli shattering Sunday night, police said.

A New York man is under arrest after cops allege he broke into Janek’s Meat Market on Route 202 in Mahwah and stole cash and lottery tickets Sunday night.

According to Mahwah Police Chief Jim Batelli, cops received a call reporting the sound of glass breaking and a suspicious car in the area of the market at about 10:39 p.m. Sunday. When cops responded to the store, they found the front door glass broken, and a man walking out of a back stairwell leading to apartments on top of the store, Batelli said Monday.

The man, Colm King Jr. of Blauvelt, N.Y., was bleeding from a cut on his left hand, police said.

Inside the store, cops found broken glass, open cash register drawers, cigarette packages thrown around the shop, and a large garden tool next to the broken-in front door, Batelli said.

Cops found some of the cash and lotto tickets they say were taken from the store on King, Batelli said. King was arrested and charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools, and resisting arrest, Batelli said.
