A Ramapo College student was arrested on drunk driving charges early Friday morning after an accident on the campus sent two of his classmates to the hospital, Mahwah Police Chief Jim Batelli said Friday afternoon.

Douglas Hervey, 20, a West Milford resident who is a student at the school, was driving two of his friends on Woods Road at 12:11 a.m. when his Honda Civic veered into a lane of oncoming traffic and struck a Ford Edge head-on, according to Batelli.

The two passengers in Hervey's car, a 20-year-old Ramapo student from Mahwah and a 21-year-old student from Sparta, were, "lying on the ground with moderate injuries," when police arrived, Batelli said.

One was transported to Hackensack Medical Center and the other to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY, for treatment, police said.

Hervey was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of assault by a motor vehicle, a DWI, and various other driving offenses, Batelli said.

The driver of the other car, another Ramapo student, was not injured in the crash, police said. The airbag in his car was deployed as a result of the accident, Batelli said.

Hervey is scheduled to appear in Mahwah Municipal Court Nov. 12.
