The Mahwah Fire Department responded to a fire in Suffern Thursday night that spread from a car to two homes.
According to Fire Chief Ed Garza, firefighters were still on scene after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, more than two hours after the fire broke out in a car parked on East Maltbie Avenue and quickly spread to nearby homes.
Everyone safely exited the homes, Garza said. According to a lohud.com report, four people and four dogs made it out of the two homes unharmed.
One of the homes was significantly damaged, while the other sustained more minor injuries, the report said. The fire spread quickly, thanks to construction at one home and heavy winds blowing the fire from the car, to a detached garage, to the two houses, Suffern fire officials told lohud.com.
According to the report, flames were visible for miles around the home, and the fire attracted a lot of attention from nearby residents.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the report said.
