Mahwah Firefighter Dies In NYS Car Accident

Friends say John Deming served on Co. 1 for 51 years

A Mahwah firefighter and longtime township resident died in a rollover car accident in Stephentown, NY, Monday afternoon, New York State police confirmed Tuesday. According to police, John Deming, 73, died after his car veered off State Route 22 at about 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, police said.

According to Deming’s friend and fellow Mahwah firefighter Jeff Smith, Deming was traveling with his wife, Fran, who was transported to Berkshire Medical Center in Massachusetts, where she is recovering from injuries she incurred during the accident. Stephentown is on New York’s border with Massachusetts.

Deming is survived by his wife and two sons, David and Johnny, who live in New Hampshire and Texas, respectively.

Deming was a member of since 1961, and served as an assistant fire chief for a year in the 1970’s. Professionally, he operated a welding business out of his Christie Ave. home since 1958.

“John was the kind of guy who was always ready to give a helping hand to anybody,” Smith said. “He was just a very good person and a lot of people in Mahwah will miss him.”

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, Smith said.
