Mahwah Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting 6-Year-Old Girl, Authorities Say

Retired resident is being held on $200,000 bail, officials said Tuesday.

A 68-year-old Mahwah man was arrested Monday after authorities said he engaged in "inappropriate sexual activity" with a six-year-old girl, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said in a release Tuesday afternoon.

According to Molinelli, Horace Ashworth of Strong Street was arrested after a six-year-old family acquaintance told her mother of the alleged activity. The mother took the child to her pediatrician, who reported the alleged abuse to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency, Molinelli said.

The prosecutor said the girl was able to go into detail about the sexual activity, and a subsequent investigation by the Prosecutor's Office and Mahwah Police Department resulted in Ashworth's arrest. The prosecutor did not release specific details about the alleged abuse.
