Mail Carrier Ejected From Post Office Truck In Three Car Accident

Postal truck kept driving and hit another car after carrier was thrown from it, police say

A postal worker was injured after he was thrown from the postal truck he was driving to the northbound lane of Island Road in a multi-car accident at about 4:45 p.m. Friday afternoon, Mahwah police said.

According to police, a car pulling out of the State Line Diner hit a mail truck being driven by Milan Desai, 47, of Fair Lawn. “The force of the impact tore the door off the mail truck and [Desai] was ejected from his vehicle, landing in the northbound lane of Island Road,” Police Chief James Batelli said.

The mail truck continued driving down the road on its own
after the driver was ejected, Batelli said. It veered left, hit a parked car in
a nearby parking lot, and finally stopped after hitting a utility pole, police

Desai was conscious at the scene, but suffered head trauma, Batelli said. He was transported to Valley Hospital via Mahwah Ambulance.

The driver of the car was issued a ticket for careless driving, but did not sustain any injuries, police said.

The “accident was serious, but considering the chain of events following the initial impact, it could have been much worse,” Batelli commented.

Mahwah Officer Stacey Conley and Sergeant Harry Hunt responded to the scene. Postal authorities also responded, securing pieces of mail scattered
on the ground, and the mail left in the postal truck, police said.

I'm assuming the mail carrier didn't have a seatbelt on. Jessica - do you know if he did or if the seatbelt failed?. If he had not been ejected from the truck he probably would not have been injured at all. I hope he has a speedy recovery!

I wish Mr. Desai a speedy and full recovery. I will miss his cheerful "good morning" and "have a nice day" when the mail is delivered to my office.

the seatbelts used in LLVs have been defective for years, they will release on there own if you are involved in an accident on right side, the impact will drive your hip into release mechism and release it. try it sometime, simple experiment, latch seatbelt and hit backside of latch with any solid object while holding some tension on shoulder harness. it will pop open. trust me i have been working on these mail trucks for almost 20 years, complained about it years ago still nothing done.
