Pool House ‘Totally Destroyed’ by Late Night Fire

UPDATED: Electrical malfunction likely sparked blaze.

An electrical malfunction likely sparked a nighttime fire that destroyed the pool house in the backyard of a Mahwah home off Forest Road early Wednesday morning.

According to Mahwah Fire Chief Ed Garza, the pool house behind a home on Lehman Street was “totally engulfed in flames,” when firefighters arrived on the scene just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The structure was “totally destroyed,” he said.

Mahwah police investigators said Wednesday that the fire was likely started by a malfunction in electrical equipment that was being stored in the pool house.

Mahwah Fire Companies 1, 2, 3, and 4, a FAST crew from Ramsey, and Mahwah Police responded to the fire, and were on scene for about two hours, Garza said.

The pool house was, “far enough away from the house,” that it did not spread, he said. No one was injured in the fire, Garza said.
