Cops: Mahwah Man Arrested After Firing Shotgun Over Brother's Shoulder

Police say the two were arguing over a money theft accusations.

A 31-year-old Mahwah man was arrested on various charges Monday night after cops say an argument he was having with his brother ended with the man shooting a bullet over his brother's shoulder, Mahwah Police Chief Jim Batelli said in a release Tuesday.

According to Batelli, Stephen Schwarz was fighting with his brother over an alleged theft of money earlier in the week. When the brother went to Schwarz's house on Nilsen Avenue to talk about it, Schwarz allegedly pointed a gun at his brother and fired a shot over his left shoulder, Batelli said.

The brother was outside and Schwarz inside, and shot the bullet through a screen door, police said. The brother broke a glass door to get into the house and restrained Schwartz until police arrived, Batelli said. The brother was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries sustained while breaking through the door, police said.
