Soldier Killed in Afghanistan Returning Home Monday

The body of a fallen soldier from Ramsey whose father is a retired Police Captain from the Mahwah Police Department will return home Monday afternoon.

Staff Sgt. Timothy Raymond McGill, 30, of Ramsey, was killed last week in eastern Afghanistan in an apparent attack by a member of the Afghan forces.

According to an emergency notification sent out to borough residents by Ramsey Mayor Chris Botta, McGill’s body will return to Ramsey Monday at noon.

“I would encourage all our residents, students and neighbors to line Main Street [in Ramsey] at 12 noon to honor his service and welcome him home for his final rest with his family in Ramsey,” Botta said in a reverse call to residents Sunday night.

“It will be a dignified and solemn procession, befitting a true American hero.”

McGill, who began serving shortly after his 2001 graduation from Ramsey High School, was a Ramsey volunteer firefighter, and had worked for the Ramsey Department of Public Works between deployments.

McGill’s father, Ray, is a retired captain from the Mahwah Police Department. 

At a township council meeting last week, township officials expressed condolences for the McGill family on behalf of the Mahwah community, and asked that residents honor McGill’s passing and service.
