'Suspicious' Man Posing as Ramapo College Driver Tried to Lure Student, Cops Say

The man pretended to be a part of Ramapo College's shuttle service when he attempted to pick up one of the school's students in Ramsey, police say.

Police are investigating a "suspicious" man who they say tried to pick up a female Ramapo College student by pretending to be a driver for the school’s shuttle service.

According to a release from Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney, the student was waiting for the college’s shuttle service at the Spring Street train station at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday when a stranger pulled up and asked her if she wanted a ride to the college.

When the student said she was waiting for the school’s shuttle, the man said he was the shuttle, Gurney said. The girl was suspicious and did not get in the car, police said.

“The vehicle is described as a dark colored four door Chrysler or Pontiac product with a rounded roof,” Gurney said.

“After conferring with the shuttle service, it was determined that they do not have a vehicle meeting that description in their fleet.”

The student was later picked up and brought back to the school by the actual car service, police said.

The “suspicious” driver is described as an Asian male in his mid-30s, Gurney said.

“The Ramsey Police Department is working with the New [Jersey] Transit Police to determine if there was any criminal intent,” he said.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call 201-327-2400.
