UPDATED: Drivers Suffer 'Serious' Injuries After Cars Smash Into Tree, Telephone Pole

Emergency responders cut off the roof of one car to remove woman trapped inside, authorities said

Two people suffered “serious injuries” Friday morning after a two-car collision on Airmount Road left one car crashed into a tree and the other into a telephone pole at the opposite sides of the roadway, Chief James Batelli said.

Beatrice Roberg, 85, of Montebello, NY, was traveling down Airmount Road at about 10:45 a.m. Friday when her car collided with another car coming off of Armour Road, Batelli said.

The crash caused Roberg’s Toyota to “come to a rest with the driver’s side door wrapped around a Rockland Electric telephone pole,” Batelli said.

Captain Mike Cooper said MFD crews “stabilized [Roberg’s] vehicle and removed the roof," using the Hurst Jaws of Life. "After the roof was removed, [EMTs] entered the vehicle [and] worked to remove the victim.”

“Roberg was alone in the vehicle and suffered upper body and leg injuries,” Batelli said.

The other car, an Acura, crashed into a tree in the front lawn of a house at the corner of Airmount and Armour Roads, police said. The driver, Xiomara Lima Castro, 73, of Brownsville, Texas, suffered neck and spinal injuries, Batelli said.

Both were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Mahwah Ambulance crews.

Castro’s son, Daniel, was in the passenger seat of the Acura. He did not suffer any injuries as a result of the accident, Batelli said. The two were in the neighborhood to visit friends, police said.

Damage to both vehicles was “extensive,” and the injuries suffered by both drivers are considered “serious,” Batelli said.

Mahwah police, fire and ambulance crews, and a Valley Hospital medic unit responded to the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by MPD Officer Michael Jack, police said.
