Wedding Guests Rescued From Sheraton Elevator

The wedding didn't quite go off without a hitch, but responders said the trapped guests were in good spirits.

Ten wedding guests at the were rescued from a stuck elevator Saturday afternoon, fire officials confirmed.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Ed Garza, the elevator at the main mezzanine level was open about six inches and could not be fully opened or shut, prompting a rescue effort from above at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Firefighters from Mahwah Rescue Company 1 and Ladder Company 2 dropped an attic ladder from above the shaft about eight feet to a higher floor, Garza said. All of the elevator's occupants safely climbed up and were unharmed. The rescue effort took about 45 minutes.

"They were laughing about it," Garza said of the wedding guests.

Given the high level of superstition at weddings, it's unclear if an elevator rescue is good or bad luck.
