American Flag From Afghanistan To Fly Over Mahwah

Township acknowledged families of those currently serving overseas

An American flag flown on the battlefield in Afghanistan will fly over the township, thanks to the Mahwah Marine Moms – a charity organization that sends care packages to troops overseas.

During a ceremony at town hall Thursday night, the Moms presented the flag to the township, asking that it be flown “in honor and support of those who have served and those who continue to serve,” Moms founder and President Terry Wendrychowicz said.

Wendrychowicz read the following to the mayor and town council Thursday night:

Let it be known that the accompanying American Flag was flown in the face of the enemy on Camp Delaram II in the Nimruz Province of Afghanistan on May 12, 2011 in honor of Mahwah Marine Moms.
"The best way to honor those Americans who perished during the attack on our nation and our way of life on September 11, 2001 is to go where our nation sends us in the war against terror, and bring to justice those responsible."
The American people can be assured that the Marines and Sailors of the Regimental Combat Team 8, are committed to doing just that.

Also at the ceremony, the Moms and Mahwah VFW presented Blue Star Banners to five families of actively serving military members. The banners, which families typically display in their windows, were presented to:

  • The family of Cpt. Anthony Bells (Army)  - now deployed in Afghanistan
  • The family of PFC Conor Harrison (Marine) - now serving in Japan
  • The family of CTTSN Richard Lowe (Navy)  now serving on USS Milius in the Persian Gulf
  • The family of Cpl. Patrick Richards (Marine) now deployed in Afghanistan
  • The family of SSG Kirk Smith (Army) now deployed in Afghanistan

Township officials and Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan were on hand to thank and acknowledge the sacrifices of the families.

Thursday, the Moms also received donations from the Mahwah VFW and PBA.

“You can not imagine how grateful we are for the continued support we receive,” Wendrychowicz said. “Our group of Moms has really been growing lately. [And,] our list [of military personnel] to ship to is quite large.”
