Environmental Groups Plan Anti-Pipeline Rally

A coalition of environmental organizations is hosting a ‘Stop the Tennessee Gas Pipeline’ Rally’ this weekend, the Food and Water Watch announced Thursday.

The project, known as the Northeast Upgrade Project, seeks to add a looping pipe to an existing gas pipeline that was built in the 1950’s. The expansion would increase the amount of gas that flows through the company’s ‘300-line,’ which starts in West Milford and ends at the Mahwah Compression Station. From there is distributed to Tennessee Gas customers.

The Food and Water Watch announced the plans for a rally in West Milford Saturday:

A coalition of concerned citizens and organizations will hold an environmental protection rally on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. until Noon in the Town of West Milford (Hewitt) NJ at the intersection of Greenwood Lake Turnpike and East Shore Road.  In the event of foul weather, the rally will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26. 

The focus will be on impending continuation of the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company's 325 Loop. Participants and speakers will include local residents, officials, and spiritual leaders. Brought to you by: Concerned Citizens and the Energy Justice Network With: New Jersey Sierra Club; New Jersey Highlands Coalition; Food and Water Watch; and The Green Party of Essex and Passaic Counties, New Jersey.  Media coverage is warmly invited to attend.

According to NorthJersey.com, a few of the environmental groups recently petitioned a federal judge to stop the pipeline extension project, which has garnered criticism from environmental and anti-fracking groups.
