Group Fights for Actual Bergen Stop in Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line

Current proposal would extend the line to the Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, report says.

A group of local legislators and lawmakers is fighting for NJ Transit’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to have at least one stop in Bergen County, nj.com reported Tuesday.

Elected officials and business owners from Bergen rallied in Trenton Tuesday to testify in front of the Senate Transportation Committee about the possibility of adding Bergen stops to the line that bears the county’s name, the report said. The group is supporting a current proposal that would extend the current line, which ends in North Bergen, to the Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, it said.

According to the nj.com report, the $900 million needed to fund the project is not yet in place. But, NJ Transit is planning to take steps to move the proposal forward, it said.

Officials at the hearing said that when the rail line was initially being planned in the 1980s, there were disagreements amongst Bergen County legislators as to where the line should go, the report said. Those disagreements have contributed to the continued lack of light rail in the county, it said.
