Hackensack Medical Center Hosting Diabetes Workshop in Mahwah

Clinic begins next week.

The following information was submitted to Patch by the Health Awareness Regional Program of Hackensack University Medical Center.

The Mahwah Board of Health in conjunction with the Health Awareness Regional Program of HackensackUMC and the Mahwah Public Library, will be hosting a Diabetes Self-Management Workshop starting Monday, September 16 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The workshop will be on every Monday’s for six weeks at the Mahwah Public Library. 

The Diabetes Self-Management Program is a 6-week workshop for people with type 2 diabetes and also their caregivers who want to learn more about diabetes.

This program was developed through Stanford Patient Education Research Center which is led by a pair of peer leaders. The meetings are highly interactive, focusing on building skills, sharing experiences and support. 

It teaches the skills needed in the day-to-day management of diabetes and to maintain and/or increase life’s activities.

Participants will learn healthier ways to deal with the symptoms of diabetes like: fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, and anger, fear and frustration. 

A course text book, and light refreshments will be available to participants for free.
