How Great is the Garden State?

A story published on Politico ranked New Jersey the 12th best state in the country.

New Hampshire was ranked as the #1 state in the country and Mississippi was ranked at the bottom, as illustrated by this map that accompanied the Politico story.

We may not be New Hampshire, but at least we beat out New York.

Politico recently named New Jersey the 12th best state in the country.

The political website ranked all 50 states based on 14 state rankings from sources like the Census Bureau, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FBI, and other factors including high school graduation rates, per capita income, crime rates and life expectancy. The website admits that its approach was not scientific.

New Jersey was ranked among the top dozen states in the nation, with New Hampshire garnering the top spot and Minnesota, Vermont, Utah and Massachusetts rounding out the top five.

While the Garden State scored among the top 10 states for lowest poverty, wealthiest per capita and lowest obesity, it fell to the bottom of the ratings for lowest unemployment (ranked 42 and just outscoring Kentucky and Mississippi) and highest home ownership (ranked right below North Dakota at 37).

New Jersey also ranked among the top 10 states with highest math and reading scores and the highest percentage employed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics jobs.

Bull. New Jersey is the best state. And we will survive Christie!
Kelly Van Rijn January 24, 2014 at 07:37 PM
Dumb article. NJ was just ranked 49th in the nation, after NY, as having the most people emigrate out of the state. People, primarily higher wage earners, are fleeing the state in droves. Given time, the whole state will look like Camden, Trenton, Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Paterson, Passaic, etc, etc. A giant dump. I wonder why? Could it be: Democratic legislatures. Super high taxes. Undue union influence?
Long Time Resident January 24, 2014 at 08:09 PM
Thanks to Governor Christie we reversed the damage done by Corzine and other democrat governors. And if Christie follows in the foot steps of Governor Scott Walker we too can reduce government and save the taxpayers of NJ money......... Scott Walker Turnaround - Wisconsin’s $912 million savings to be used for tax cuts!!!! http://nation.foxnews.com/2014/01/24/turnaround-1-billion-surplus-wisconsingov-scott-walker-returning-it-taxpayers
Art Vatsky January 24, 2014 at 09:05 PM
We came to NJ in the late 1980s where there seemed to be a positive mood about the state cleaning itself up, full of good people wanting to be better people. Now I know better. We have traditions that benefit some but inconvenience many more. Built in inefficiencies we choose not to discuss. Opportunities we choose not to take. I suspect it is the elderly, not the wealthy, leaving the state. Their adult children left first so why should they stay behind?
Teaneck_Resident January 25, 2014 at 12:38 AM
To put it in plain English NJ sucks as a state. If it were not for my job I would have left a log time ago. NJ, along with California and New York is nothing more than an experiment as to how well people accept "soft communism".
Edward Ogin January 25, 2014 at 08:28 AM
Comments like the above show how great a state this is. I stay because of its riches and blessings. But more because of Edith. Where else can you have your cake and Edith too?
Teaneck_Resident January 25, 2014 at 10:15 AM
Art Vatssky, yes you are right many elderly people are leaving NJ. MY mom left, my grandparents left. They had no choice, it's too expensive here. If it were not for my job I would have packed up my family, left NJ and never looked back. I have a number of years to go but on the day I retire I'm out of NJ on that same day and not a second later.
Ridgewood Mom January 25, 2014 at 01:56 PM
(1) People who make more money work harder and demonstrate greater industry then people who make less. (2) It is too expensive to live in NJ, because of all the money being spent on handouts for people who are poorer then me, so I will leave for a place that is cheaper to live in. (3) It will be cheaper to live in that place because the people there have less money, and since they have less money there they don't work as hard or demonstrate as much industry. (4) If I get a job in such a place then I will make less money then I will with my job in NJ, but that doesn't mean that I will be working less hard and being less industrious. And just because I can't afford to live well in New Jersey, and have to move to cheaper place in order to live well, doesn't mean that I don't work hard or that I lack industry. What really matters is that I get a much from society as possible but that everyone understand that it is horribly unfair to think that society, or anyone else in it, should get anything from me.

STUDY: People who laud Gov Scott Walker tend read dumb-dumb rags like World Net Daily and support creationism over evolution. #RightWingDopes #ByeByeBully #Hillary2016

Hey Citizen of America I see you have to resort to name calling and stupidity in your comments because you can't discredit how Governor Scott Walker took a failing Democratic state deeply in debt and turned it around and produced a better more efficient state government that now has 1 Billion Dollar surplus that will be returned to the taxpayers. Facts are a terrible thing when they aren't on your side.
Citizen of America January 25, 2014 at 11:50 PM
Facts? Dumb-dumbs who cite the World Net Daily, believe in every faux controversy about Obama, and doubt evolution took place, clearly aren't interested in facts.
Long Time Resident January 26, 2014 at 10:30 AM
Gee thanks for the elementary school reply citizen of america. I understand it's difficult for you to admit that Governor Scott walker took over from a incompetent Democratic governor and turned a Blue state that was deeply in debt and in serious fiscal trouble around. That's because you disagree with his successful conservative policies and limited government policies that produced a one billion dollar surplus that will go back to the tax payers. Of course as a leach and a moocher on society all you want is government to take from others and give to you. Typical liberal.
Ridgewood Mom January 26, 2014 at 04:12 PM
I guess that Long Time Resident has given up on defending Christie and has moved on to pushing Scott Walker to be the next Republican nominee. It seems the right has given up on Christie. I keep getting Rand Paul ads hurled at me in the upper right corner of my Patch main page.
Citizen of America January 26, 2014 at 05:09 PM
Ridgewood Mom -- What's funny and instructive is how conservative sheople (such as LTR) follow lock-step with the Conservative Echo Chamber. In this case, Rush Limbaugh devotes his Friday 1/24 radio show to give a raving endorsement of Walker. And Fox News.com ran a pro-Walker editorial ("Turnaround!") the same day. Suddenly, toadies like LTR are chiming in on Scott Walker -- using the same phrases and "facts" that were spoon-fed to them by the Conservative Echo Chamber -- on a Patch thread that is about New Jersey. It's like they're all following orders -- switch the subject from Christie to Walker. God forbid someone like LTR should think for himself.
Long Time Resident January 26, 2014 at 07:04 PM
Yea, Citizen of America, don't it suck when a Republican does something a Democrat can't, (run a government efficiently) like Governor Walker. Governor Christie has done some of the same things as Walker, and your afraid that, unlike your messiah Obama and his side kick KILLARY, who have screwed up everything they touch, is going to look bad when people compare them to Christie and Walker. Well no need to worry about that because that train (looking bad) has already left the station!! Shame your a cheerleader for a bunch of incompetent politicians. Your such a good Democrat lemming denying the facts and just attacking the people who disagree with you and your Democrat buddies because you know they are right...Lets see what other names you can think of for me.
Citizen of America January 26, 2014 at 10:28 PM
Awww...Mr "KILLARY Dumbocrat Libtard" is hurt by name-calling. The irony is rich with this one. Anyway, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is considered that Walker's plans will increase state deficits: "The state already expects a shortfall north of $700 million in the next two-year budget; Walker's plan would add to that. That doesn't strike us as honest budgeting." /// Where's all the weeping and gnashing of teeth when it comes to spending our children's and children's money??? /// http://www.jsonline.com/news/opinion/editorial_main/gov-scott-walker-sacrifices-policy-for-politics-b99191042z1-241916551.html#ixzz2rZ8ntSPg Follow us: @JournalSentinel on Twitter

Ha, your calling me names is a perfect example of mind over matter, I don't mind because you don't matter. Your opinion of me makes no difference in my life at all. You however can not say the same since you are clueless in America and labels mean things to you. Have you gone out to take candy from babies in their stroller lately. I hope your EBT card is working ok for you, and did you get your heating paid for again this year? Only a special person could sit on their butt and let others provide their food, housing and heat for them and you are special......just keep drinking that Kool-Aid from the liberal media clueless in America.

Lot of pro-right comments here, observation: four of the top five states have Democratic governors; four of the lowest five states have have Republican governors. Just saying. Now the interesting thing is those last four states vote vociferously against their best interests every time.
JasperRam January 27, 2014 at 08:16 AM
By the way many of these comments come from Ocean County people - an area that could fit snugly into any of those lowest five states.
Citizen of America January 27, 2014 at 10:00 AM
JasperRam -- It's no surprise that rightwingers avoid the facts. "Blue states" tend to have higher incomes, higher education levels, and higher IQs -- http://sq.4mg.com/IQpolitics.htm /// "Red states" are lower in all of these metrics. In addition, red states tend to be (in the words of conservatives) "moochers and parasites" -- http://thecentristword.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/red-state-socialism.jpg

SOme of the "NJ sucks crowd" willl be surprised when and if they decide to move out of state. If you still work, your salary will be lower, you will pay sales tax on things that aren't taxed in NJ,pay a use tax on all of your vehicles every year, and other things that are taken for granted in NJ.And those handouts we are paying for go to the losers who live in the red states.
Long Time Resident January 27, 2014 at 11:54 AM
Just keep reading those leftie news articles clueless in America. I realize it's hard to admit Democrats are fiscally irresponsible. When the Republican-run vs. Democrat-run states were compared the interesting result is that the top ten fiscally responsible states are controlled predominantly by Republicans, while the bottom ten fiscally irresponsible states are controlled predominantly by Democrats. Top ten states by fiscal solvency: ◾Legislative control – 8 Republicans, 1 Split, 1 N/A (Nebraska Unicameral) ◾Governor’s party – 9 Republicans, 1 Democrat ◾State control – 7 Republicans, 2 Split, 1 N/A (Nebraska Unicameral) Bottom ten states by fiscal solvency: ◾Legislative control – 8 Democrats, 1 Republican, 1 Split ◾Governor’s party – 8 Democrats, 2 Republicans ◾State control – 7 Democrats, 1 Republican, 2 Split http://freedomworksfranklin.org/2014/01/17/republican-run-vs-democrat-run-states/

ABC NEWS - DEMOCRATS IN TROUBLE FOR MIDTERM ELECTION! TAKE BACK AMERICA WORKING JUST FINE........ Thanks to Obama and his policies ABC is reporting that registered voters are divided essentially evenly, 46-45 percent, between Republican and Democratic candidates for Congress next fall. That’s a challenge for the Democrats, because Republicans usually hold the edge in midterm turnout. And it’s shifted from an 8-point Democratic lead in a pair of ABC/Post polls last year. But the risk also could be to incumbents in general. This poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, finds anti-incumbency near the almost 25-year high it hit in October, with just 27 percent inclined to re-elect their representative in Congress. The Congress itself has a dismal 16 percent approval rating, steady at just 4 percentage points above the 40-year low in October. And while the Republican Party holds a crucial 7-point lead over the Democrats in trust to handle the economy, it also has problems of its own, on empathy, helping the middle class and related issues such as raising the minimum wage and extending unemployment benefits. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2014/01/politics-2014-low-confidence-in-leaders-and-a-dead-heat-in-midterm-preferences/

If NJ is the 12th best state, God help the USA. There are more things wrong with this place than can be counted. A LOT more bad than good. The USA is the Titanic - all the signs are around us. Poverty, income disparity, drug epidemic, incarceration epidemic, job migration, unbridled immigration, political corruption, over-regulation, over-taxation - these are just some of the acute problems at both the national and the local level. It just goes to show how much so many other places on the planet suck worse, where even just surviving is a challenge. What a crying shame. We could all do better. But we won't.
