NJ Transit Expands Mobile Phone Ticketing to Main/Bergen Lines

Passengers along the rail line will now be able to purchase and display train tickets using their smart phones.

Some passengers riding the NJ Transit Main and Bergen rail lines will now be able to ditch the lines and paper of ticket vending machines.

The transportation service announced Tuesday that it is expanding its mobile ticketing service “MyTix” to the two rail lines, allowing riders to purchase and display their train tickets to conductors using a smart phone app.

The program had been piloted along the Pascack Valley Line since April, and used during some major events on the Meadowlands Line and in service between Secaucus and New York Penn Station.

Following the successful pilot, transit officials said, the service will be expanded gradually throughout the entire state by the end of the year.

“As part of our ongoing effort to tap into the latest technology to improve the overall customer experience, we are expanding our mobile ticketing app to give more customers the ability to treat their smartphones as both a ticket vending machine and a rail ticket or pass all in one, providing for a seamless travel experience,” James Weinstein, NJ Transit’s executive director, said in a release.

The app, which can be downloaded for free to Android devices and iPhones, can also be used to purchase monthly and weekly passes, NJ Transit said. It will be available immediately for customers on the Bergen, Main and Port Jervis lines.
