Road Reopening Beats Back-to-School Deadline

West Airmount reopened Tuesday aftrenoon with little work left to be done, officials said.

A roadwork project with a goal of finishing before school starts in the township Wednesday came in right under the wire.

After two months of roadwork, West Airmount Road reopened Tuesday afternoon, according to a Nixle alert from the township. According to the alert, it opened both lanes of traffic at about 4 p.m.

The major construction project on the roadway, which included replacing a corroded underground pipe, relocating water and gas pipes, repairing the sanitary sewer line, and repaving the road, is nearly finished, the alert said.

“Temporary paving is in place and the final surface paving will take place in the near future,” Mayor Bill Laforet explained in the alert.

“While the closing has been an inconvenience it was a long-term improvement that was overdue.”
