Roadway Shuts Down A Week Behind Schedule

West Airmount Road will still reopen by September 1, officials say.

One of the streets that connects the east and west sides of Mahwah is officially shut down. The “major construction project,” that officials say took up most of Mahwah’s road improvement budget for 2013 will shut West Airmount Road for the rest of the summer.

Despite starting about a week behind schedule, township engineers said at a council meeting last week that the road will be reopened by September 1, before the first day of school. A delay in the delivery of supplies needed to carry out the project caused the later start, officials said.

The $770,000 project includes replacing a corroded underground pipe, relocating water and gas pipes, repairing the sanitary sewer line, and repaving the road.

The township announced earlier this month that the closure will affect area houses and businesses, and no parking will be permitted in the construction zone.
