State Troopers Deny Christie Helicopter Flew Over GWB During Lane Closures

New Jersey State Police said Gov. Chris Christie’s helicopter did not fly over the George Washington Bridge nor the then-gridlocked town of Fort Lee during the September 2013 lane closures widely referred to as “Bridgegate.”

None of the three helicopter flights transporting the governor during the week of Sept. 8, 2013, “flew over, or close to either the George Washington Bridge or Fort Lee, including the flight on 9/11,” a New Jersey State Police spokesman wrote in a short release to the media on Tuesday.

The state legislative committee investigating the Bridgegate scandal had been looking into the governor’s air travel records during the five-day period that Fort Lee traffic lanes were closed last year, The New York Post reported Monday.

Upon hearing of the probe, Christie’s office said the governor flew from New York City to Trenton on Sept. 11—the third day of lane closures—but declined to elaborate on the helicopter’s flight path, according to NJ.com.

A Christie spokesman also denied that former Port Authority executive David Wildstein and the governor ever shared a helicopter, The Star-Ledger reported.

The Bridgegate scandal has been a thorn in the governor's side for more than a month now, negatively impacting his approval ratings and even spurring on some opponents who are calling for his resignation.
