Cory Booker, the former mayor of Newark, was sworn in as a Democratic senator from New Jersey on Thursday in Washington.
Vice President Joe Biden had the honors of swearing in the 44-year-old Booker. The men exchanged embraces as Booker became the second African American in the U.S. Senate.
Booker won a special election in mid-October, defeating Steve Lonegan to fill the remainder of Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s term. Lautenberg died in June.
Booker is expected to seek election to a full term in the Senate next year.
