Election Winners Say They Want To Get Right To Work

After a victory party at Tuesday night, new mayor Bill Laforet says he's headed to business administrator Brian Campion's office Wednesday morning. According to Laforet's campaign manager Lou Rizzo, Campion and township attorney John Conte will work with Laforet on obtaining the official election results from the Bergen County clerk and moving forward to swear him in "as soon as possible."

"It's time to start working on Mahwah," Laforet said Tuesday night.

Laforet said the , in which he beat opponents former mayor John DaPuzzo and Councilwoman Lisa DiGiulio in 10 of Mahwah's 14 voting districts, was "inspiring."

"I think the turnout [of 41 percent] says a lot, and I think that this political campaign season was one in which people were presented with information like never before and I am humbled and grateful for the votes," he said.

Both Laforet and the winning town Council candidate Chuck Jandris that the township still has a tough road ahead in terms of several outstanding issues facing residents.

Jandris, who beat out opponent Steve Sbarra to take on a full term in the seat he was appointed to earlier this year, said "I am thrilled to be able to continue to serve the Township of Mahwah on the Council. We have our work cut out for us, with the Crossroads literally at a crossroads [the people have spoken], flooding issues in town and the budget in need of tweaking so that we can all continue to survive together." But, he did say he is optomistic, and looking forward to working out these issues.

"Best wishes to our new Mayor, Bill Laforet," Jandris added.

The two can be sworn into their positions after voting results are verified by the Bergen County Clerk's Office.
