JK Students Celebrate Classmates' Cultures [PHOTOS]

Students at celebrated each others’ cultures during a daylong International festivity last month. Each classroom was transformed into one of 12 different countries, and students experienced food, music, dance, history and culture of the other countries during the second annual ‘International Day.’

In preparation for the celebration, students were asked to contribute to a map pinpointing their heritages. “We wanted International Day to represent all of the cultures we have within our building,” JK Principal Michael DeTuro said. “This is a great opportunity for our students to become more familiar with each other and celebrate the diversity in our building.”

Organized by the HSO, about 80 parents volunteered to put together the celebration. It began with an international dance assembly at the high school, and was helped throughout the day by the MHS Future Educators of America club members.

“The kids responded really well to this, and they were excited about it,” HSO parent Lisa Pingue, who helped organize the event, said. “They were really proud to tell the other kids more about where they are from, and to learn about the cultures of their peers.”
