Mahwah Investigating Full-Day Kindergarten

According to an update from the Superintendent, township schools are looking into how the district could switch over its half-day Kindergarten program to a full-day one.

Switching over Mahwah’s half-day Kindergarten program to a full-day program would, “absolutely be, educationally, the right thing to do,” Superintendent Lauren Schoen said at a Board of Education meeting Wednesday. And now, the district’s central administration is looking into the feasibility of doing it as early as next year.

“We are in the process of looking at the implementation,” of full-day Kindergarten in the district, Schoen said during an update at the meeting.

The implementation of the Common Core standards, which each year build on skills learned the year before, and which will be tested with the state-mandated PARCC exam beginning next year, helped prompt the administration’s more active look at expanding the program, she said.

Currently, a team is looking at what impacts expanding Kindergarten would have on the district’s facilities, staff, curriculum, and first graders.

Schoen said she hopes to give a more detailed report on the group’s findings at a board meeting this month, and a special public presentation on the possibility in December.
