Mahwah Schools Report Higher Than Average Per Pupil Spending

The state recently released the 2014 Taxpayer's Guide to Education Spending.

On a ranking of New Jersey school districts based on per pupil costs during the 2012-13 school year, Mahwah is somewhere in the middle of the pack.

According to an interactive map NJSpotlight.com put together based on the 2014 Taxpayer's Guide to Education Spending, recently released by the state Department of Education, it costs between $8,400 and  $94,000 to educate each child in the state.

Mahwah spent $19,734 to educate each student in the district during the 2012-13 school year, the data said. That's slightly higher than the state average, $18,891 per pupil. The state average is up about 4.8% from the previous school year, the report said.

According to NJSpotlight.com, the district with the lowest per pupil spending in the state was the Classical Academy Charter School in Clifton, and the highest went to the Bergen County Special Services District. Special education districts held the top six spots on the list last year, the report said.

Of regular-education districts, Avalon, a K-8 in Cape May County, posted the highest per pupil spending, at $43,775.
