Mahwah Schools Win $1M Facilities Upgrade Grant

State money will help pay for electrical switchboard, vent, and boiler replacements.

The Mahwah School District applied for five state grants to help pay for facilities upgrades at five of its six schools, and according to an update at a recent Board of Education meeting, it received all five, for a total of $1,036,524.

According to Business Administrator Ed Deptula, the grants will help pay for a portion of $2.5 million worth of facilities improvements over the next few years.

About $373,000 of the grant will help pay for an electrical switchboard replacement at the high school, which Deptula said he anticipates happening during the summer of 2015. The grant money will cover about 40% of the total cost of the project, which officials have said is a major undertaking and will likely shut down the school for a portion of that summer.

The rest of the grant will help pay for vent replacements in the two older wings of Joyce Kilmer elementary, and boiler replacements at Betsy Ross, George Washington, and Ramapo Ridge. About $264,000 of the grant will go toward the vent replacement project, which is estimated to cost about $660,000 total. The state also kicked in about $400,000 toward the boiler replacements, which will cost about $332,000 each.

Last month, the Christie Administration announced $57 million in schools facilities grants to help fund over 200 buildings projects in 49 Bergen County school districts. Statewide, over $500,000,000 in grant money helped pay for facilities projects at 331 school districts.
