Schools Delayed, Mahwah Warns of 'Hazardous' Road Conditions

The Mahwah school district announced Tuesday night it would run on a two-hour delay schedule Wednesday. The announcement came after a Nixle alert warning from the township asking residents to stay off the roads Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

The alert also suggested that weather forecasts underestimated the severity of the storm, and subsequent driving conditions throughout the township.

“As with any storm forecast there is constant communication with the Chief of Police, Director of Public Works, the Superintendent of Schools and the Office of the Mayor to ensure your safety,” the Nixle alert from Mahwah Mayor Bill Laforet said.

“Weather forecasters predicted a swift moving storm through our area early [Tuesday], but snow and freezing rain continued into the early evening hours and longer than anticipated. The drop in temperatures and the duration of the storm has resulted in hazardous road conditions…The below freezing temperatures increases the potential for black ice and hazardous roads throughout the evening and into the early morning commute.”
