A February President’s Day break originally scheduled to be five days long, has been knocked down to two. The Mahwah Board of Education Wednesday night voted unanimously to add the three days, Feb. 20-22, back into the 2012-13 school calendar to make up for days lost during and after Hurricane Sandy. Students will still have Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 18 and 19, off.
The newly adopted calendar also adds in a full day of school on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Mahwah students already made up two of the lost six days during the canceled NJEA convention. So with the additional four days, the district will return to the same number of school days it had at the beginning of the year.
The new calendar allows for three snow days. According to interim Superintendent Dr. Karen Lake, if more than three days are used, additional days will be taken from spring break. If less are used, the Memorial Day weekend holiday will be elongated.
The calendar changes were recommended by a committee of board members, administrators, teachers and parents who met before Wednesday night’s meeting to discuss possible calendar options. Lake said there was some discussion amongst the group as to whether or not MLK Day should be a full or half day.
The board voted Wednesday to make it a full day, with the understanding that half of the day’s activities would be dedicated to service and learning about the significance of the holiday.
