White Sox Win Rec Softball Championship

Fifth and sixth graders cap a great season with an 8-3 victory in the championship game

The Chicago White Sox made headlines Tuesday for an away-game winning streak. The team bearing their namesake in Mahwah fared even better this season.

The 5th and 6th grade girls rec White Sox softball team are the 2012 Champs. The girls on the team had an 8-2 record for the season, 4-0 record in the playoffs, and won their championship game 8-3.

“We had a great group of girls on the team this year,” coach Anthony Chuck, who has been coaching the team since t-ball, said. “They were dedicated, we had almost every girl at every practice and game, and it taught them how to play well together, which I think helped us out in the end.”

Though some of the girls have been playing together in the township’s rec softball league for years, others were completely new to the team this year. “We had a very diverse team, a nice mix of first-timers and seasoned players,” Chuck, who co-coaches with Geoffrey Gilchrist and Dan Quiles, said.

During the season, the girls played games against three other Mahwah teams, one team from Franklin Lakes and another from Maywood.

“It really is just a great program overall, and all of the teams did well,” Chuck said.

As for the White Sox success, Chuck said, “great girls, good coaches and parents that were so helpful and supportive,” made for an enjoyable season with a “really exciting” outcome.
