5 Fourth of July Weekend Hiking Trails

Check out a few local trails from the New York-New Jersey Trails Conference.

Looking for an outdoorsy way to continue the Fourth of July celebration this weekend?

The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference lists over 300 hiking trails on its website, with their difficulty levels, directions, route descriptions, lengths, and estimates on the amount of time it takes to hike them.

Patch picked out five local trails ranging from easy to difficult in difficulty level. Check out the Patch recommendations for where to go on a hike this weekend:

Length: 1 mile

Route Type: Circuit

Dogs: No Dogs

Features: Views

About: This path is a one-mile loop circling Lake Henry. Along the trail, you will likely see beautiful views and lots of animal species.

Old Cedar Trail Loop in the Campgaw Mountain County Reservation

Time: 2 hours

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Length: 3.3 miles

Route Type: Circuit

Dogs: Allowed on leash

Features: Views

About: This trail goes to the top of Campgaw Mountain. From there, you can see a view of most of Bergen County, and the NY skyline.

Schuber/Ridge Trail Loop (Ramapo Valley County Reservation)

Time: 3 hours

Difficulty: Moderate

Length: 4.5 miles

Route Type: Circuit

Dogs: Allowed on leash

Features: Views, Waterfall, Historic feature

About: This hike is one big loop that passes a waterfall and some great views. It goes through some of the lesser-used portions of the reservation.

Yellow-Silver/Schuber/Cannonball Trail/Bear Swamp Lake Loop

Time: 5 hours

Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous

Length: 8.8 miles

Route Type: Circuit

Dogs: Allowed on leash

Features: Views, Waterfall, Historic feature

About: This route will bring you to a looking area over most of the county and the Manhattan skyline. It passes several lakes, a waterfall, and other natural sightseeing points.

Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve

Time: 1.5 hours

Difficulty: Easy

Length: 2.3 miles

Route Type: Circuit

Dogs: Allowed on leash

Features: Views, Woods, Birding

About: This hike loops around a lake, and is in the middle of a scenic nature preserve.
