Mahwah Teams Ready to 'Relay for Life' This Weekend

Locals still have time to get involved in the event, which benefits the American Cancer Society.

A group of about 30 Mahwah teens and adults have spent the last few months raising money for the American Cancer Society. And this weekend, the group will see all of its efforts come to fruition at the Ramsey Relay for Life.

According to Tori May, a Mahwah High School junior who is chairing Mahwah’s Relay teams, says township residents make up two teams this year – a 20-member MHS team and a 10-member adult team. Together, the teams have raised over $3,000 for the Relay so far, she said.

The teams make up more Mahwah representation in the Relay than in year’s past, which was one of the goals Mahwah high schoolers articulated when the event kicked off several months ago.

“I think it’s a great thing to get as many Mahwah people involved as possible,” May said. “It’s such a great event.”

The Ramsey Relay, which is the biggest one in Bergen County, is poised to break a record this year.

Since its founding in 2008, the Ramsey Relay has raised over $870,000 for the for the ACS. From donations this year, the group so far has raised over $156,000 – pushing the all-time Relay total to more than $1 million.

“It's exciting to know that Ramsey was able to raise over $1,000,000 in such a short amount of time,” Rich VanDerWall, the PR Chair for the Ramsey Relay, said.

The Relay itself is happening at Ramsey High School this Friday and Saturday. Overall, 76 teams have already signed up to participate. Organizers say it’s not too late to get involved. Locals can donate online, or go to the walk this weekend.
