Last year, Bergen County reported four human cases of West Nile, or about .04 cases per 10,000 people — slightly less than the state incidence rate of .05. Across New Jersey, the number of West Nile cases were at an all-time high in 2012. "The whole country experienced the worst year on record for West Nile Virus," said Dr. Shereen Semple, epidemiologist at the New Jersey Department of Health. "We don't know exactly why yet, but most of the experts agree that it has to do with the weather conditions. When the conditions are very hot and dry, we tend to see bad years." To give residents a sense of West Nile’s prevalence across the state, Patch has pulled together 2012 county-level data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. …

Summer officially kicks off this Friday. For the first time, an organization in Ramsey is taking part in a charity walk that literally capitalizes on the fact that Friday is the longest day of 2013. The Alzheimer’s Association is hosting “The Longest Day” walk at locations throughout the country on June 21. Locals can now take part in the walk, thanks to Memory Care Living, a collection of residential communities catering to people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Memory Care’s location in Ramsey is hosting a walk around town from 2-10 p.m. Friday, and asking residents to join in. The walk is to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. A brand new smartphone application available to NJ Transit riders in South Jersey to let them know bus arrival times is coming to the northern part of the state, reports NJ.com. “MyBus Now” was unveiled in December in a pilot program for bus routes near Trenton and Princeton. used in South Jersey last December. By April, it had spread to Atlantic City and Camden. A version of the program has been in Morristown since 2010. Now it's North Jersey's turn: This area is expected to have the free service by the end of the year. The app uses GPS and some proprietary technology to tell users at bus stops the buses within 30 minutes of their location. Every June, I watch kids enviously as the school year dwindles and the excitement builds. The marijuana was shrink-wrapped and wrapped in duct-taped bundles, police said.
A couple from Massachusetts is being held on $200,000 bail after Mahwah Police allegedly found about 65 pounds of marijuana wrapped in shrink wrap and duct tape hidden in the trunk of their car, Chief Jim Batelli said in a release this weekend. According to Batelli, Jawara McIntosh, 33, and Carlotta Leslie, 23, both of Dorchester, Mass., were originally pulled over on Route 17 North Friday night when police noticed their Nissan Maxima driving recklessly and cutting off other drivers. Police received consent to search the vehicle after seeing several open containers of alcohol in the car, talking to McIntosh and Leslie, and believing they were under the influence of drugs, Batelli said.
