Mahwah Firefighter Dies In NYS Car Accident

Friends say John Deming served on Co. 1 for 51 years

A Mahwah firefighter and longtime township resident died in a rollover car accident in Stephentown, NY, Monday afternoon, New York State police confirmed Tuesday. According to police, John Deming, 73, died after his car veered off State Route 22 at about 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, police said. According to Deming’s friend and fellow Mahwah firefighter Jeff Smith, Deming was traveling with his wife, Fran, who was transported to Berkshire Medical Center in Massachusetts, where she is recovering from injuries she incurred during the accident. Stephentown is on New York’s border with Massachusetts. Deming is survived by his wife and two sons, David and Johnny, who live in New Hampshire and Texas, …

Former Owner Of Nobody’s Inn Dies At 72

George’s Fusiek’s visitation Monday and funeral Tuesday

George A. Fusiek, former 40-year Mahwah resident and former owner of Mahwah restaurant Nobody’s Inn, died Saturday at age 72. According to this obituary on the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home website, though best known in the community as the Inn’s owner, Fusiek was also a teacher, New Jersey State Trooper, a general contractor, and a YMCA water safety instructor. Nobody's Inn was located on Franklin Turnpike in Mahwah, where Roxanne's Restaurant is now. Fusiek, who had moved to Garfield, owned the Inn for 30 years. Fusiek was also known as a beloved husband of the late Francis Fusiek, father of Joyce and George J., and grandfather of Vincent and Michael. Mayor Martel Remembered by Friends, Family at Funeral

'We’ve lost a great man who loved this town,' new mayor says

Richard J. Martel, the beloved and long-serving mayor of Mahwah, was laid to rest today.  His long service did not go unnoticed, as an impressive crowd of family, friends, public servants and well-wishers gathered to bid him good-bye. The service began just after 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church.  The Rev. William P. Sheridan led the service in the gym of the church, to accommodate those who came to pay their respects to a man the pastor referred to as a “father, mentor, coach and sports enthusiast.” Martel, who died after battling a respiratory illness, was remembered first by a relative, then by new Mayor John DaPuzzo, who said of his longtime friend, “We’ve lost a great man who loved this town, almost as much …

Veterinarian Cheryl Welch Loses Brief Cancer Battle

Beloved owner of Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital passed away on Wednesday.

Cheryl Welch — a mom, a business owner, a doctor, a friend and inspiration — lost her brief battle with pancreatic cancer Wednesday. She leaves behind four children, Jack, 13, Brigette, 13, Kyra, 10, and Reese, 7.  The veterinarian from Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital fell ill shortly after completing the New York City Marathon — in four hours and 25 minutes — in November. In mid-January, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which spread to multiple sites in her body, including her brain and spinal cord. Members of the Mahwah community expressed grief at losing Welch, who was an influential member of the community. She often gave presentations in the district's elementary schools.
