Dear Editor, I am writing to voice my support to re-elect John Roth to the Mahwah Town Council. John Roth has served us very well during the past 8 years, and we will continue to need his experience, dedication and management skills as we face important and complex issues in our community during these difficult economic times. This is a very important election year in Mahwah because we will be electing a new Mayor, and 3 candidates for the Town Council. As a result, we will need the stability of John’s experience, dedication and fairness on our Council, more than ever, in order to preserve the quality of life and the Town services that we have enjoyed in Mahwah. John has seriously been involved in Mahwah for almost 20 years. He has …

The following are letters to the editor, submitted via email. Council President John Spiech Dear Mahwah Taxpayers, It is time once again (we did this just last year) to elect a Mayor. This time the Mayor-elect will serve a four year term. The next four years will be critical for all Taxpayers since it will be our dollars that will go to fund the expenses of the Town. Our current Mayor, Bill Laforet, was elected last year to fulfill the final year of Dick Martel’s four year term. Bill Laforet could have just sat quiet and probably won a four year term. Instead, being an astute business person, he quickly realized that the Township could not meet the State mandated 2% Budget Cap. With 35 years as a successful Businessman, he knew that he …

Letter about voting in the upcoming municipal election

The following three letters were submitted to the Mahwah Patch by Councilman Harry Williams: Mayor - Sinclair I address this letter to everyone like me who know and like both candidates for Mayor of Mahwah. Difficult as it may be, we must choose only 1 and perhaps my analysis will help you decide to vote for Ed Sinclair. This is not a choice of good or bad, experienced or not. Both are good men and both are newcomers to politics. Mistakes will be made regardless of the experience level. But this is precisely why we must consider the management style of Ed Sinclair and why it is the critical difference in the decision. Ed Sinclair’s style is reminiscent of our late Mayor Martel; inclusive, not dictatorial or manipulative. As did Dick Martel…

The following is a letter to the editor from Adam Gussen: Over his years in Congress, Scott Garrett has voted to support the State of Israel on several occasions. He's voted to recognize the Israel on her anniversary. He's recognized her right to defend herself. He's voted to urge Mahmoud Abbas to remove the 10 articles in the Fatah Constitution that call for Israel's destruction and terrorism against Israel. In short, Scott Garrett has stood with Israel on many occasions. However, when Israel's security was actually being threatened, Scott Garrett put partisan politics ahead of the safety of every Israeli man woman and child. In October of last year, Scott Garrett voted against an amendment designed to stop US land from being …

To Our Neighbors, A few weeks ago, Mayor Laforet, proposed to the town council the idea of outsourcing your DPW's recycling department. The amount of support we received from you, the residents, was, and still is, hard for us to comprehend. You stood by our side, and along with us, we were able to defeat this administration's attempt at privatizing your services....and for that, and from the bottom of our hearts...we say thank you! Moms share tips and creative lunch ideas
Wednesday marks the first day of school for Mahwah students. Back to school means back to packing lunches. Yikes! I have such a hard time coming up with new ideas. Peanut butter and jelly gets boring. Nutella has been a great backup especially paired with some strawberries, but that gets old too. Regardless, both options will be in my pantry for busy mornings but I need some more interesting solutions. Do you have any good lunch box ideas? I asked around and some other moms shared their tips with me. Elise S., an N.J. mom of two, told me how she brightens up peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches with a little trick. “I sometimes cut them into different shapes with cookie cutters or use a little gadget that cuts the sandwich into a …

As president of PBA Local 134, I once again find myself in the unfortunate position of having to address yet another barrage of insults, misrepresentations, and outright lies directed at the men and women of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, by Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan. “Political Environment” In her August 17, 2012 press release, Ms. Donovan asserts that the Sheriff’s Office operates in a “political environment,” not a professional one. To the contrary, in Bergen County I can assure you the duties carried out by our sworn staff are done so in a strictly professional environment. Our sworn officers are hired and promoted like many other law enforcement officers throughout New Jersey; through the New Jersey Civil Service …

As far as the 2% cap - better talk to your tea and other party friends (who also are controlling the council) who are very vocal demanding 0% increases and even less and who, in the council, had the opportunity to change the budget. Sometimes you and I have to realize that the majority of residents (and council) members don't look that far ahead.   more ›
