Auto Store Owner Admits Cheating on Taxes

Whippany man, the proprietor of several Wilson Auto Parts, under-reported income by more than $1M, U.S. attorney says.

A Whippany man has admitted cheating on his taxes by filing false returns on revenue earned via a chain of auto parts stores he owns. Emanuel Marques of Whippany, the owner of several Wilson Auto Parts outlets, faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine after pleading guilty last week to one count of subscribing to false personal federal income tax returns in U.S. District Court in Trenton. Marques also agreed to make full restitution to the IRS, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman. The Whippany man admitted that he filed returns in 2009, 2010 and 2011 that under-reported his income from Wilson Auto Parts by more than $1.1 million, which he kept for his personal benefit, Fishman said.  His omission resulted…

What Regenbogen is saying is that he doesn't classify us as an "outlet store". We are a single location, family owned and operated auto parts store and repair shop that has been doing business in Mahwah since 1985. ...Maybe if you consider that we are a retail outlet selling auto parts and services, then it, technically, is correct. Looking up the definition of "outlet", I find this: an agency (…   more ›

65 Pounds of Pot Found in Couple's Trunk, Cops Say

The marijuana was shrink-wrapped and wrapped in duct-taped bundles, police said.

A couple from Massachusetts is being held on $200,000 bail after Mahwah Police allegedly found about 65 pounds of marijuana wrapped in shrink wrap and duct tape hidden in the trunk of their car, Chief Jim Batelli said in a release this weekend. According to Batelli, Jawara McIntosh, 33, and Carlotta Leslie, 23, both of Dorchester, Mass., were originally pulled over on Route 17 North Friday night when police noticed their Nissan Maxima driving recklessly and cutting off other drivers. Police received consent to search the vehicle after seeing several open containers of alcohol in the car, talking to McIntosh and Leslie, and believing they were under the influence of drugs, Batelli said. Cops found two large pieces of luggage in the trunk …

Dentist Sentenced to 21 Months for Tax Evasion Scam

The dentist from Mahwah owned three practices, including one in Wyckoff.

A dentist from Mahwah who pleaded guilty earlier this year to running a $2 million dental scam was sentenced to 21 months in prison, US Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced in a release Wednesday. Stephen A. Beukas, 47, owned three dental practices in the mid-2000s, one in Wyckoff, one in Colts Neck, and one mobile dental unit that serviced senior citizens living in nursing homes. Beukas evaded paying over $800,000 in owed taxes, and failed to disclose $1.3 million in income he earned during 2008, when he filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on the practices: Stephen Beukas, DMD; New Jersey Mobile Dental Practice PA; and Mobile Dental Practice PC, according to the release. Beukas pleaded guilty earlier this year to tax evasion and bankruptcy fraud, …

Driver Slams Into Mahwah Citgo Gas Pump

The driver's 'medical condition' caused the crash, police say.

A driver who suffered a medical condition while traveling near the Franklin Turnpike Citgo station Tuesday afternoon took out one of its gas pumps, local authorities confirmed Tuesday. According to Police Chief Jim Batelli, the driver of the SUV, “suffered a medical condition that resulted in her striking one of the gas pumps.” Officials say somewhere between one and two gallons of gas leaked from the pump as a result of the crash, which happened at about 12:45 p.m. “There is an automatic shut off on all these pumps so there was never any danger of fire [or] explosion,” Batelli said. Mahwah’s Fire Department HazMat crew responded to the scene to secure the station and clean up the spill. Officials said the driver’s identity is not being …

Police: Duo Carrying Fake Guns, Synthetic Drugs Arrested in Mahwah

Police say the imitation handgun and rifle were realistic looking.

A pile of fake contraband led to real drug and weapons charges against two Massachusetts residents driving through Mahwah Monday night. According to police, Samantha DeJesus, 22 and Benjamin Reed, 23, both of Nahant, MA, were initially pulled over at about 9 p.m. Monday after cutting off another driver on Route 17 South. After noticing, “green vegetation matter,” in the car, police got consent to search the vehicle, Police Chief Jim Batelli said in a release Tuesday. Inside, they found more of the plant – which the drivers identified as “spice,” a synthetic form of marijuana – an imitation handgun, imitation rifle, narcotic pills, glass bongs, hypodermic syringes, a digital scale, and other drug paraphernalia, Batelli said. Cops say they …

Someone's 90 seconds "fly-through" on Rt. 17 or 180+ seconds on the Throughway isn't really "In Mahwah". What's remarkable (and at the same time disconcerting) is that all these criminals that our officers eventually snag HERE had already been traveling through many other jurisdictions - where they obviously escaped detection. Too bad there's probably too much paperwork involved in seizing all …   more ›

'License, Registration and Cell Phone,' NJ Cops May Soon Tell Drivers

Proposed bill would allow police officers to search cell phones after accidents. Supporters say it will help curb distracted driving-related incidents. Opponents say it violates drivers' rights.

When stopped by police, motorists usually are asked to present a driver's license and registration. If a bill just introduced before the state Senate becomes law, cell phones could be added to that list. The legislation, sponsored by state Sen. James Holzapfel (R-Ocean), would allow police to search a driver's cell phone without a warrant to determine if he or she was talking or texting immediately prior to a motor vehicle accident, according to an NJ.com report. Those in favor of the measure say it will give law enforcement officers—who must have "reasonable grounds" to demand the phone—an important asset in investigating crashes involving distracted driving, the article said. Using a cell phone while driving is a violation of New Jersey …

All of this was decided, rightly or wrongly, when cops were allowed to arrest you if you refused to take a breathalyzer and field sobriety test. Heck, the courts even permit flagrantly unconsitutional sobriety checkpoints. You're guilty until proven innocent not only when there is an incident, but even when not, as with the checkpoints.   more ›

Mahwah Drug Charges Double in 5 Years

While a steady increase in drug usage in the township has led to a more than 120 percent increase in total drug-related charges since 2008, a combination of officer awareness, training and increased enforcement has carried those numbers higher, police say

Between 2008 and 2012, the number of adults charged with drug related offenses in Mahwah has more than doubled and, while the overall increase is troubling, police say the biggest concern is the more than 175 percent increase in charges related to the most dangerous and addictive class of narcotics. Police officers and detectives responding to a Patch analysis of police records said that increase in narcotics usage combined with an expanded training program for law enforcement has led to a cumulative upward trend. According to Mahwah Police Chief Jim Batelli, his agency has tracked the steady increase of drug charges over several years and bolstered training and enforcement. While his officers are trained to "look beyond the traffic …

Torch Run Raises Money for Special Olympics

The torch stopped in Mahwah Friday morning.

A tropical storm didn’t stop a group of law enforcement officers and athletes from running around parts of the state Friday in support of the Special Olympics. Police Officers from throughout Bergen County took part in the statewide 2013 Special Olympics of New Jersey Torch Run Friday morning. In the Northwestern Bergen leg of the race, about 170 police officers from Mahwah,Ramsey, the Bergen County Sherriff’s Department, NJ State Police, and dozens of nearby agencies participated, running through the rain, passing a torch from town to town. Mahwah DARE Officer Retiring After 'Blessed' Career

Friday's DARE Graduation will be Officer Joe Horn's last official job in Mahwah. Horn is retiring after 20 years on the force, 14 of which were spent as DARE coordinator.

It is not easy for Mahwah DARE Officer Joe Horn to talk about his retirement. After 20 years on the MPD, Horn will end his career in the township on Friday, in a very fitting way. His last assignment - Friday evening’s DARE Graduation ceremony. For the last time, Horn will congratulate a class of DARE graduates for completing a drug and alcohol prevention course with him, something the police officer says he’s been “blessed” to be able to do for the past 14 years. “I knew I wanted to work with the DARE program as soon as I got hired,” Horn said. “But, I had to prove myself as an officer first. [Teaching DARE] is not just something that’s given to you, you have to aspire to it.” At the time, Horn said his friend, Mahwah Sgt. Rob Curtis, was…
