Ramapo Rumble Rolling Into Mahwah

The third annual poker run is next week, and will raise money for Ramapo College scholarships, research, and capital projects.

Anyone who has driven through Mahwah over the past few weeks has likely seen signs of the Ramapo Rumble. There is a banner hanging across the street from the entrance to Ramapo College, and a billboard promoting the charity event on Route 17. For its third annual Ramapo Rumble, the college is asking bikers from across the area, their families, and friends to take part in a 90-mile motorcycle tour that starts and ends in Mahwah. It’s a poker run, so the ride includes three stops to pick up poker cards, and a BBQ lunch after the ride with live music, awards, and a 50/50 raffle. Sponsored by Inserra ShopRite Supermarkets and the Ramapo College Foundation, the annual ride raises funds for Ramapo College student scholarships, faculty and …

Mahwah Makes 'USA Today' Front Page

Article examines why changes in education may be sending Joyce Kilmer’s famed poem Trees – which many argue was written in the township – into ‘oblivion’

A story about the fate of Mahwah poet Joyce Kilmer’s poem Trees in the changing education system made the front page of the USA Today Tuesday. In a piece that is also posted online, the national newspaper says the poem, which local scholars argue was written in Mahwah and inspired by township trees, is nowhere near as prominent in education as it was decades ago. The poem, which the article says was memorized by most students in the country now over the age of 50, may be “on the road to oblivion.” “Blame it on changes in education: Comprehension and invention are in, rote memorization is out,” the article says. “Blame it on changes in poetry: Rhyme is insipid, sentimental is stupid.” The USA Today article credits Mahwah with commemorating …

Mahwah Named One of ‘America’s Best High Schools’

MHS was in the first half of Newsweek’s annual list of the top 2,000 high schools in the nation

Mahwah High School was named one of the country’s best high schools in the Newsweek and Daily Beast’s annual ‘America’s Best High Schools’ list, released Monday. The list ranked what it called the 2,000 best high schools across the country. Mahwah High School was ranked No. 615. According to an explanation in Newsweek, schools across the nation were ranked based on six criteria – graduation rate, college acceptance rate, advanced exams (AP, IB and AICE tests) taken per student, average SAT or ACT score, average advanced placement score, and percentage of students enrolled in at least one advanced placement class. Newsweek asked more than 5,000 high schools across the country to report their data from the 2010-11 school year. About 2,500 …

We are celebrating Jenny Lederer who is a 2nd grade teacher at Lenape Meadows. Both of my daughters have had the privilege of being taught by her. She is so much more than a teacher of the materials that the kids need to know to move on to third grade. She teaches them life lessons. Lessons about caring and kindness and what it means to be a good human being. She encourages free thinking and …   more ›

Mahwah to Try for Excess ‘Safe Routes to Schools’ Money

Though the township was already denied the grant to install solar-powered ‘School Zone’ signs, officials say it may be awarded discretionary funds to carry out the project

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Mahwah is living by that motto when it comes to funding for a road safety project that officials say would be beneficial near the township’s schools. In December 2011, the town council applied to the state for a “Safe Routes To School” grant that would have paid for solar-powered “School Zone” signs to be installed on Ridge Road and Fardale Avenue. The competitive grant is meant to fund projects across New Jersey that make areas where children walk to school safer, and encourage kids to walk and bike to school. Earlier this year, Mahwah found out that it did not receive the Department of Transportation grant. However, township engineer Mike Kelly said at a township council meeting Thursday …

Mahwah May Add Full-Day Kindergarten, But Not Next Year

A bill being considered at the state level will likely help the school district decide, officials said

Though Mahwah school district officials say the Board of Education has discussed offering full-day Kindergarten classes at some point in the future, interim Superintendent Karen Lake said Wednesday that it will not happen next year. According to Lake, the Mahwah school district will continue to offer only morning and afternoon half-day Kindergarten classes during the 2013-14 school year. “We will be looking at the feasibility of running full-day Kindergarten,” Lake said. “We will not be offering it next year, but I cannot speak to the future beyond that.” According to Mahwah district officials, the board’s conversation was prompted by bills currently pending in the state legislature. Assembly Bill 2927, co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Connie…

I know of several people who passed over buying a home in Mahwah because of the lack of a full day program. It is not a luxury anymore but something people look for that adds value to the homes in town. Not to mention it give the children a head start in the more challenging curriculum that the state is mandating.   more ›

This year’s Harlem Wizards vs. Mahwah Thunder basketball game is scheduled for this Saturday at the Ramapo Ridge Middle School at 7 p.m. Tickets purchased in advance are $12, and those bought at the door are $15. Mahwah Students Will Have Longer Memorial Day Break

The board of education voted to put unused snow days back in the calendar

During a school year when Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the calendar, a lack of snow days will pay off for township students. Mahwah’s board of education voted Wednesday night to elongate this year’s Memorial Day weekend break using two unused snow days that were built into the post-Sandy calendar. Mahwah students will now be off Friday through Tuesday, May 24, 27 and 28. Previously, students only had the Monday off. This year’s school calendar has already been significantly modified – the February President’s Day break originally scheduled to be five days long, was knocked down to two, and students were in classes on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The calendar had allowed for three snow days. Submit your questions or news tips to jessica…
